There are reports circulating in the internet that the next generation of the Subaru Impreza WRX will receive a 2.0-litre turbocharged flat-4 engine with estimated 270hp instead of the current 2.5-litre engine.
The report was sourced by Motor Trend from a spokesperson from Subaru of America. The new engine will be a turbocharged version of the latest FA20 engine from the Toyota 86 (GT-86) and Subaru BRZ. Presently, the naturally aspirated FA20 for the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ produces 200hp.
The downsizing of displacement (from 2.5-litre to 2.0-litre) is most likely to be related to better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. Moreover, the FA20 engine comes with Toyota’s “D-4S” direct injection and port injection technology.
