Toyota has launched the all-new Granvia introducing not only a new nameplate to its Australian lineup but significantly raising the bar in the people mover market.
We are uncertain if this model is wise and capable to be the replacement model of Toyota Tarago (a.k.a Estima in Japan). This all-new Granvia is based on HiAce, tweaked to be better in ride comfort, handling, safety and interior refinement and features.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley said the new Granvia was aimed at high-end hospitality, family and corporate buyers who would appreciate the Granvia’s sense of style, cabin comfort and premium features.
“The Tarago has served us well but when it came to its replacement, we knew we had to deliver a markedly better vehicle and Granvia does this in every area from its stylish looks to its refined and functional cabin,” Mr Hanley said.
“The Granvia is an all-new vehicle from the ground up and as a premium people mover it provides private and corporate customers with the highest levels of safety, comfort, and luxury features that they demand in this segment,” he said.
Priced from $62,990, the new Granvia is offered in two grades – Granvia and Granvia VX – with a choice of six or eight-seat versions in each grade.
From the outside, its bold styling and wide track gives it an imposing presence on the road with premium touches including auto LED headlights, taillights, foglights and daytime running lights, 17-inch alloys wheels, and chrome garnishes adding an air of luxury.
Step in through either of the rear dual sliding doors – power operated for VX variants – and the same premium ambience continues inside.
Six-seater variants feature an incredibly spacious rear cabin with four individual captain’s chairs with armrests, reclining backrests and a sliding seat base that adjusts along a length of more than 50cm ensuring easy access and the flexibility to accommodate a variety of passengers in supreme comfort.
For the VX grade, the four captain’s chairs along with the driver’s seat are all power-operated with the rear seats incorporating a power ottoman leg rest, adjustable headrest and solid armrests with all seats finished in a luxurious quilted leather-accent upholstery.
Both eight seat versions gain a fourth row two-seat 60/40-split bench that folds and flips up to further increase load space and versatility.
Befitting its premium status, all variants of Granvia are very well appointed with standard features including front and rear climate control, smart entry and start and the latest multimedia system with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility.
Power for the new Granvia comes from a refined 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that generates maximum outputs of 130kW of power and 450Nm of torque to drive the rear wheels through a standard six-speed automatic transmission.
Complete with a stop & start system, it offers a fuel consumption of just 8.0l/100km on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 211g/km.
To ensure the optimum balance of ride comfort and solid, stable handling, Toyota has employed a MacPherson front strut and four-link rear suspension with coil springs.
Effective and efficient braking comes courtesy of large ventilated discs all-round while the hydraulically-assisted rack and pinion steering delivers superb feel and easy maneuverability.
As a vehicle designed to move people, safety was a priority and Granvia features a comprehensive array of Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance features as standard on every model.
These include pre-collision safety system (PCS) with pedestrian detection (day and night) and cyclist detection (day only); high-speed active cruise control; lane departure alert; road sign assist; and automatic high beam.
Other advanced safety features include blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera with guide lines, panoramic view monitor and nine airbags.
Granvia also benefits from Toyota Service Advantage with a maximum capped price of $240 for each of the first six scheduled services, with six monthly/10,000km intervals.
